      <image:title>Home - What is backflow?</image:title>
<image:caption>A backflow preventer has two internal check valves and is located down stream from a water meter. Traveling from the street; the water supply pipe enters a water meter, after which it enters a backflow preventer, which is typically located near the hazard being protected. These hazards include heated floor systems, lawn sprinkler systems, commercial domestic water, commercial dishwashers, espresso machines, ice makers, soda fountains, dental devices, chemical plants, fire sprinkler systems and others. The purpose of the backflow preventer is to stop water from flowing from the commercial dishwasher, or any hazards listed previously, back to pollute the city water supply. The Department of Health, the water purveyor, and Municipal water department require all assemblies to be tested by a certified Backflow Assembly Tester once each calendar year. Test reports are then submitted to the customer and to the local water purveyor; typically the city that a business, residence or industrial site resides in.</image:caption>
